Long....Long....Long....Day

The Transformation Simulation was today. To summarize:

1. Split up into 3 groups of 5-6 people
2. Given 6 different company director roles ie. Finance Director, Marketing Director, etc.
3. Background information on mock company and some brief objectives on designing, developing, marketing and selling a product to a particular market.
4. Now Go!

The morning - first cycle. CHAOS is a good way to describe the morning.

The afternoon - second cycle. Much better. Planning, teamwork, innovation, even a little enjoyment.

However, I must say 7:45 - 6:30 is a damn long day. Especially when you only got 4 hours of sleep the night before. I guess I better get used to it.

A Day of Presentations

Today, last years MBA class presented their 992 research projects. It was definitely a long day to sit and listen to 11 different presentations. It definitely challenged my listening skills. All in all, a good day of presentations.

It was interesting to see the wide gammit of presentations that were done. From biotech to agriculture to health care admin - some really interesting perspectives on a variety of different issues.

Today was definitely a good opportunity to socialize more with the professors and meet the graduating class. I got a little more insight into the coming year - A LOT OF WORK & READING. I feel I am prepared, it is what I was expecting anyways.

2 days down, 4 to go!

First Day - Orientation

Today was officially my first day back at school. It was the first of a 6 day orientation they have set up for the new MBA recruits.

There were a number of presentations throughout the day advising the students of the program, the 5 different specializations, rules & regulations of the MBA program & Grad Studies, and other tidbits of information. The remainder of the day was filled with spending an exorbitant amount of money at the bookstore, and learning about the computers: where the labs are, how to access our H: drive, and make sure our email accounts are accessible. It looks as though each MBA student gets a laptop for the year. Pretty sweet! Not like a need another computer, I already have 2, not counting Jeff's.

From the discussion today regarding each specialization, each student will have the option to 'mix & match' classes from different specializations. So instead of me taking all 4 of my specialization classes in International Business Management, I can choose some classes (not sure if more than one) from the other specializations. One of the classes from the AgriBusiness specialization has peeked my interest, and I think it would mesh nicely with the other classes I have choosen to take. I think I had some preconceived notions about what AgriBusiness was about - it is not just about farming, or Agricultural companies.

All in all, a fulfulling yet long day. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Arms....Sore....

Today I met up with Brennan at the university to check out the gym and do a little wall climbing at the P.Ed building. We got ourselves a lesson in the basics of wall climbing. It was so very cool! We each took a couple of turns climbing different sections of the wall, and had an awesome time.

I didn't get up as far as Brennan did, then again, he is taller than me. I thought that we both did fairly well considering we have never done it before.

I didn't really know what to expect, but I certaintly didn't expect my forearms to be SO weak and sore. Both times I climbed I basically had to stop because my arms didn't have the strength to reach anymore. I am not looking forward to tomorrow...they are gonna hurt like hell.

It is defintely something we are both going to do again. I am sure we will find time to go during the school year. I guess the more often we go, the better we both will get. We might even get to the top one day.

I have also been informed of a jogging track and a racquet ball court. I can see myself spending a lot of free time using the P.Ed facilities.

Such a good day!

Unemployed

So, I have been unemployed as of Wednesday last week. Sorry for not posing, but I was a little distracted with all the free time I had. Right now, it mostly feels like I am on vacation, in fact, you could say I am as I still had 2 weeks coming to me - wahoo! Being paid for doing nothing is great (but not for long), and I don't even have to go back.

Even though I won't be employed anymore, my schooling will be just as much if not more work than my job was. So in a sense, my old work is just getting replace with a new kind of work. Work that I am actually looking forward to, and should be very challenging and exciting.

As for school, class don't get started until the 7th of September, however I have a pretty intensive week of orientation starting on the 29th of August. So as far as next week goes, I am going to try and get as much relaxation in as possible, as well as getting myself prepared for school.

I want to make sure I keep up with my exercising, so Brennan has offered to show me where the gym is at the university. There was also some talk of wall climbing - sounds fun. I remember in 1995 when I first started university and we were shown the 'exercise room' on one of the orientation tours I went on. When I say room, that is exactly what it was. I don't think it was any bigger than my living room. I never used it of course. However this new and improved 'exercise room' sounds awesome. Looking forward to spending time there as well at the pools.

School here I come!

Finally, some pictures!

Well, I finally have gotten around to uploading most of my pictures onto my two photo albums. Last month I decided to switch over to Flickr, mostly because it seemed like a better program than fotopages, and because a lot of the other blogs I read use the program as well. However, I didn't realize that you can only upload a certain MB amount of pics per month - TOTALLY SUCKY! If I would have know that I would have never switched. Now I have the hassle of having my pictures in tow locations - argh! I will likely convert everything back to fotopages when I have some time. Oohh, maybe next week - lots of time then. :)

So check out My Flickr Page for the pictures from the beginning of the trip (I think there are only about 15), and then check out My fotopage for the rest.

I have yet to post all of the pictures from our trip, so stay tuned (though most have then have been uploaded).

Thanks Ty!

I quite enjoy this song that I was introduced to while at Emma Lake over the July long weekend.

Tomas, Tyson, Brennan, and I were on our way to get ice cream when the song came on. At first I was a little shocked, as I started paying attention to the song in the middle of it. It is so awesome. I am listening to it right now, it has been on repeat for the last 5 minutes. Hee hee!!

My favourite part:

and then you say "Hey, I brought you flowers"
and then you say "Wait a minute Sally,"
"I think I got sometin' in my teeth could you get it out for me?"
That's fuckin' teamwork!
What's your favorite posish?
That's cool with me, It's not my favorite but I'll do it for you.
What's your favorite dish?
I'm not gonna cook it but I'll order it from ZANZIBAR!

Good to be home......I guess

After a week of overeating and no exercise, a trip to the gym was exactly what I needed this morning. I have finally reach a point in my life where I actually crave exercise, and I am glad it is that way. Boy, do I feel 10x better!

Our trip to California was fantastic and I am missing our friends already. I look forward to returning in the near future, as it looks as though my brother-in-law will be taking a job with Apple Computer Inc. There is going to be a whole Saskatoon community down south. It is nice (and convenient) that when everyone moves, they move to the same location. Definitely saves on travelling expenses.

As for today, I am going to try and get my desk/office cleaned all up for the coming school year. I finally have my desktop computer moved upstairs to the office and have everything attached as well as my new wireless internet working (thanks Brennan). I need to purchase a small filing cabinet, as well as some other necessities for the office and then I will be set. However, the work really begins when I have to organize everything, bills, books, printer, etc.

Pictures of our trip with be posted in my photo album shortly. I took so many pictures. I guess that is the advantage of a digital camera.

Last Day

Well today is our last full day with Amy & Randy. We have had a lot of fun since we have been here and have managed to squeeze a lot of things in.

Yesterday we spent the day in San Francisco. We jumped the Caltrain just after 8 am, and arrived in San Francisco around 9:45 am. We walked through the touristy parts, past Union Square, through China Square, to make are way to the Pier. Our first stop was Ghirardelli Square. It used to be an old chocolate factory, but has since been turned into a tourist place with many shops, restaurants, and of course, a chocolate shop. By the time we arrived at the square we were all pretty much ready to chew our arms off, so we stopped for lunch. Jeff did a wonderful job scouting out the first seafood restaurant we saw, McCormick & Schmick's. I don't think I have had that good of a meal since I was last on the coast. You can't NOT eat seafood when you are this close to the ocean, Randy! Due to us likely returning late from our Alcatraz trip, we weren't sure exactly when we would have a chance to eat supper, so we pigged out. First, we started with the Jonah Crab & Bay Shrimp Artichoke Dip with Toasted Walnut Bread. For the main course, Amy had this amazing Halibut, Jeff got the Fettucini Alfredo with shrimps & scallops, and I ate this wonderful Salmon stuffed with crab & brie. It was a excellent way to spend lunch.

For the remainder of the afternoon, we wondered around the piers. We tried to stay away from as many touristy events and activities as we could. The only touristy activity we did was Alcatraz. It was soo awesome, but sooo short. We took the last tour of the day and it was way too short. We will have to make sure we do it again the next time we come to visit. Stay tuned for some cool pictures.

Today's events involve the Winchester Mystery House and maybe some time at the beach in Santa Cruz.

Lego

We have only been here 2 days and I am already sad 'bout having to leave so soon. It has been wonderful seeing Amy & Randy again. You don't realize how much you miss your friends 'til you see them again.

We walked around Los Gatos yesterday afternoon browsing around in the shops. Bne was right, it is really hot in Los Gatos. We went for supper at Willow Street and finished off the evening watching Princess Mononoke. I must have been exhausted, as I slept through most of it.

Today has been fairly relaxing. We headed to the Valley Fair Shopping Center, mostly because Jeff wanted to check out The Lego Store. Jeff didn't find exactly what he wanted, but we managed to find him a Tie Fighter.

We are going to continue with the relaxation for the rest of the day. Amy is cooking supper, which I know will be absolutely amazing. Her & I should be able to fit in some game testing around making supper. As for tonight, Carl might be joining us for a little Super Munchkin.

BTW: We are looking forward to visiting the area a little more often than expected as Jeff's brother, Kevin, just got offered a job with Apple. w00t!!!!

Back to School

So I received my third confirmation today that I have been accepted by Grad Studies. I guess I am a little paranoid, that is all. Obviously they were ok with my marks. I think the rest of admission package was pretty good.

I have been a little hairied all week about this, especially with my leaving on vacation and having school start on the 29th. I kinda wanted to get things squared away at work, even with everyone on holidays and then the VP had to go out of town today. Oh well, I guess I will be back at work for a few more days after holidays.

The year to come will definitely be a change, considering I have been out of school for almost 6 years, but it is going to be fun. Concentration, focus, hardwork and determination will get me through.

I would like to thank everyone who supported me.

2 More Sleeps

The past week I have been gearing up to go on our trip to California. Trying to get everything in order before we leave, and making sure I remember to take everything has been a stressful process. But it will all be worth it.

We drive to Calgary first thing tomorrow morning, with a short stop off in Drumheller to visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum, should be a lot of fun. Both Jeff & I have not been there since we were kids. We are hoping to arrive in Calgary around supper time and will crash at Bne's for the night. I am hoping I get a chance to see my girlfriend for a bit Saturday night - her parents are even visiting, so that would be cool.

Sunday morning we fly out of Calgary at 11:30, arriving in San Francisco around 1:30. Ohhhh, I'm so excited. Vacations are so much fun.

Chris and Suzi were over last night for our weekly Earthdawn game. However the focus was lacking a little. Suz & I could hardly contain ourselves from talking about our up-coming trips. It was a night full of distractions.
