Party!!!

The party was a big hit! The hot tub was packed from about 8pm til 1pm, when I finally had to kick Deb, Denis, and Rob Simpson out.

There were a few rousing games of crib being played throughout the night, however the one worth mentioning is the game Alan & I won against Denis & Jeff. Both teams were about 10 points away from the end and Denis & Jeff were gonna count first. It was up to Alan & I to do our best to try and peg out. It is such a glorious victory when you can win the game by one point for having last card, w00t!!

Of course, the party just wasn't the same with everyone gone. We missed you all - Amy, Randy, Rilla, Bne, Rob, Suzi, and Chris(hey, where were you last night?)

Check here for the rest of the nights festivities. Good times!

Disappointed

Well, I wrote the GMAT yesterday morning and I didn't do as well as I would have hoped. Given a little more time I probably wouldn't have done better. Damn timed test! I didn't really get a lot of time to practice my time management skills with practice tests, given my sick situation the week leading up to the exam.

Oh well! I know that I did the best I could. I guess this will give me more time to prepare for next year, and save some money.

Burned!!

In an attempt to clear my head of this stupid cold (that is still hanging on) I plugged in the kettle beside my bed on Tuesday night. Steam always seems to do a good job of clearing up the lungs, head and sinuses whenever I have a nasty cold.

It was all good until I decided to pack it in and go to bed. I guess I didn't reach around the kettle far enough when putting my book away on the bedside table - SCORCH!!!!, before I knew it I had burned my arm. Now, I have burned myself before, granted it hasn't been all that severe, but nevertheless I know what the steam from a kettle feels like. I really did think I was that close to it. Boy was I wrong.

It stung like any burn will, I threw some cold water that was sitting in my water bottle at the side of my bed, onto my arm and continued reading. About 1 minute later, I started to think , "I think this is a little worse than I think it is." I went to the bathroom, got myself a cold cloth, stuck it on my arm and return to bed to read. Again, about 5 minutes later, it starting to really stink, I went back to the bathroom and stuck my arm under the tap and ran some cold water over it.

By this time I had come to the conclusion that this burn was pretty nasty and it need some medical attention. Not having much first aid products in my house I began to ransack the cupboard for something. I came across some Ozonol ointment that said it was ok for minor burns, and located the adhesive tape I knew I had. Good, I have something to kill the pain, now I just need a bandage of some sort. The moment came when I need to become creative, as I didn't have any gauze or bandage to put over the burn. Ahhhh!!!!! a maxi-pad, perfect. I am sure Jeff thought I was losing it when I went downstairs and asked him to tape a maxi-pad on my arm. When you don't have exactly what you need, you make do with what you got.

As for the burn it has started to blister and bubble. It really doesn't look pretty at all. I am sure it is a 1st or 2nd degree burn. Guess I need to be a little more careful next time. I hope it starts healing soon.

Bubs

I don't like shooting at people. I don't wanna kill anybody. I just like scaring them, so I shoot right over their hear, you know, way o' clean over their heads. But as long as there is a big flame coming out of the gun and, you know, you look mean enough, its usually enough to scare the shit out of somebody.

Got a late night call Friday from Mr. Camp Counsellor. It was good to hear from him, even though it was a short visit.

He sounds like he is having a lot of fun, and working with a good group of people, however I think exhaustion has set in for him. And I am sure those first couple weeks in tepees when it rained constantly wasn't all that exciting either.

I am looking forward to him returning home. I am sure he will have lots of *interesting* stories to tell us about camp.

J.D.

J.D. has been in our family for just about 10 years now. I was not that partial to dogs til J.D. came into our lives. In fact, I had a few unsettling experiences with dogs in my childhood that actually made me afraid of them.

.J.D. has been living with my parents for about the last 3 years, though he was initially my brother's dog, my sister-in-law is a cat lover and isn't really that partial to J.D.

I have had the opportunity to live with J.D. off and on in the early part of his years. When my brother first got him we were living together and I can still remember the constant whining the first few nights when we were trying to train him to sleep in the kitchen. That didn't last very long, and he eventually ended up sleeping in my brother's room.

Like any new puppy, J.D. liked to chew on various things. I remember returning from school one day and finding the foam from the inside of the couch cushions spread ALL OVER the house. Oh and, I can't forget my souvenier - one chewed up Math 110 Single Variable Calculus textbook.

J.D has always been a hyper dog, like most dalmations, and has had a difficult time controlling his excitment. He is a big dog, and when you enter my parents house, it is hard not to become one with the floor as he greets you.

It was really good to see him last weekend when we went home to Biggar for a visit. However, he has recently been to the vet and isn't doing so well. He has trouble with his back legs. The vet isn't sure what it is, but it is likely something to do with his joints. When you watch him walk, you can see that his back legs don't step forward straight, his step kind of has a curve. The vet gave him some anti-inflammatory drugs, which did the trick, but they eventually wore off.

It is hard for me to see a dog like J.D. struggle so much. When he ran into the kitchen to get his food, and his back legs buckled underneath him, it hurt me to watch him struggle. I had to lift his legs for him so he could stand on all fours. Also, when he descended down the few steps on the deck when being let out, seeing him struggle and stumble was awlful.

I love J.D. very much. I dread the day when he isn't at my parents door greeting me.

Mmmmm Good

The best salad in the world I got from my mother. I have enjoyed incorporating different ingredients into the salad over the years. ENJOY!

Leaf Lettuce, freshly washed
Strawberries, sliced
Banana, sliced
Kiwi, Sliced
Almonds, slivered

Dressing

Miracle Whip Light Salad Dressing
Vinegar
Milk
Sugar
Lemon Juice

I don't usually rely on measurements in much of my cooking. For this recipe it really depends on how much you are making. I only usually make it for myself. As far as the dressing goes a 4:1 ratio is probably the way to go. You only want enough milk, sugar, vinegar and lemon juice to make it creamy, sweet and tart.

Blahhhk

So I have gone and caught myself a nasty summer cold. Great timing. :(
I am into day three of the cold and it is starting to affect my sleep, which in turn affects my concentration, and then, of course, hinders my studying. Not a good sign. This damn cold could mean the difference between passing and failing. I can tell my concentration isn't as good as it usually is when I have to read a simple math question 2 or 3 times. It is even harder when trying to do the verbal questions. Just trying to understand what the sentence or paragraph is talking about it a difficult task.

I guess I just have to plug through, studying as much as a I can before completely powering out, and try to get lots of rest. Though this cold has been waking me up in the night, and it is difficult to fall back to sleep when I have multiple choice math problems running through my head.

I am not quite sure why I am at work today. As my co-worker said, "why are you here today?", when I walked in and responded to 'how are you today?' with 'sick, tired and bitchy.' "The principle, I suppose", was my response. "Principle, NOW?", she says. Yeah, I know it doesn't make a lot of sense. Well, with my wanting to get away from this job/organization and being slightly ticked off that they continue to pass me over for jobs, even those in your own department because you are above the position, AND hoping to not be around here much longer, it doesn't really make a lot of sense that I would come to work soley for the principle of being at work, especially when I am legtimately sick. (k, that was a run-on sentence)

I guess my rational for coming in is that, I have a doctor's appointment later today, and have to take my gramma shopping and I wouldn't want anyone from work to see me out after I had called in sick for work. What would they think? Sounds dumb, I know. I really shouldn't care, and I don't, so again, I question my being here today.

I likely won't get any work done today. Then again I don't have much work to do. I am trying to get all of my projects finished, done, completed, off my desk - so that in case I am gone I haven't left my co-workers which a bunch of work. I am already likely screwing up the training schedule by me leaving - that is enough stress for them.

Bad Cold! Go Away!

Tootsie

I can't believe that I had never seen this movie before today. Awesome! Hilarious! I would watch it again in a minute.

Fish Fry

So we were in Biggar this weekend for a visit with the fam. Friday night was the much anticipated 'fish fry', that Dad seemed to be looking forward to all week. I must admit, I was too. Dad was doing his best to cook the fish the same way in which he does it when he is on his fishing trips. A cast iron pot, lots of oil, propane burner, batter, and beer of course. We had a good time!

The rest of the fam was eating the fish(Jackfish & Pickerel) as fast as we could put it on the table. Luckily there was still some left once Dad & I got to sit at the table.

Now, if you know my family at all, you will know that we all LOVE fish, except Mom. She likes to catch it, but doesn't really want to eat it. I was a little skeptical that she would actually have any, but she did. Making sure, of course, that she got a good piece that had no bones in it (which is usually the tail). (Dad is an awesome filleter, usually NO BONES)

It put it simply, when this exchange occured between my parents I just about fell off my chair, and peed my pants.

MOM: "Can I get a piece of tail?",

DAD: "Anytime you ask."

Enough said!

The Tower

The task of investigating as much of the area around the Kaer has been granted to the group by the Council. Some of the peoples of the Kaer are interested in various flora and fauna in the area. The more that is known of the earth above the better understanding there will be of the happenings on the surface. There is a tower nearby, and the group has set out to investigate.

Ulka, K, and Josephine reach the tower and immediately notice the lack of vegetation in the area. There are 25 obelisks surrounding the tower. Ulka notices a dip in the earth by the tower and begins to dig away at the dirt - she uncovers a scroll. Josephine determines it is a small part of a larger ritual. The group continues to search, though nothing else is discovered. We retreat to a cave for the night.

We are awoken in the night - Savages!!! They attack. We come back with full force and eliminate their shaman. His followers flee.

'These savages are connected to the tower some how.' We discover a scroll on the shaman. It is examined by Josephine, and is repulsed and left shaken by what she reads - Nethermancer script! K sleeps for the remainder of the night, and Ulka stays up with a distraught Josephine.

The morning finds them at a village. They stay in the background watching the "new" shaman become branded. A chilling circle envelops him.

The group retreats back to the tower for further investigation. 'We need to find out more about these people.' Josephine flys to the top of the tower. She notices a small opening, just big enough for her. She attempts to crawl into the opening, however finds the top closing in on her. She quickly escapes unharmed. The group continues to dig at the earth where the previous scroll was located. Josephine finds some armour, completely intact. They remove the armour from the ground, and retire to the cave.

We return to the tower that night to find the savages performing their rituals. It occurs to the group that they were wrong in exhuming the savages artifacts and agrees to put them all back. We gather up everything, put it in the center of the tower area and leave by the river.

On the way home we are confronted by the "new" shaman and some followers. The shaman speaks, 'There is a creature in the tower, it died there. The creature helped us survive for many years. It taught us magic, and protected us from other evil creatures.' We tell him about ourselves, our situation and the Kaer. The shaman is unaware, 'this is all unfamiliar to me. I don't understand.' We leave each other peacefully, and continue on our way back to the Kaer.

Upon arrival at the Kaer, we immediately seek counsel with the lone Nethermancer of the Kaer. Her insight is limited. We request her company upon return to the savages village - she declines, though agrees to meet with anyone we should return with. We arrange an exchange. We leave shortly after returning, accompanied by 2 Kaer villages who will teach the savages the Book of Tomorrow. The savages, in return, allow 2 of their villagers to return with us to the Kaer, so that the Nethermancer may speak with them.

On the Hunt

A guerilla attack is the plan. K, Ulka, and Josephine head out from the Kaer to hunt down and kill the mayor.

Not long after leaving the Kaer, we encounter a group of pirates. They are quickly subdued, but alas, K and Josephine have been harmed. We search the jungle for a resting spot where Josephine can heal K and herself. Josephine, distraught from the fight ends up during more harm than good with the fire healing, leaving herself in too weak to move forward. The group returns to the Kaer.

Days later, the group heads out once again along the same path. We reach an area where the earth looks plagued by death itself. No vegetation, no animals, just dry, cracked, dead earth. As if the Horrors themselves have been destroying an corrupting the area. We notice footprints - they must be the mayors. We follow the tracks.

We notice from a distance a ship. Looks like pirates, perhaps the mayor? The groups decides to start a fire near the shore, to help light some nearby rock in which to throw at the ship. However, the ship does not get close enough before the darkness sets in, and the group is forced to retreat into the jungle. Ulka manages to locate a safe den where we can rest and hide for the night.

At dawn we return to the shore where we made the fire, only to find 4 pirates surrounding the fire. They have been ripped to shreds! It appears from claws and the rocks that we were going to use on them. There are more! We see 4 pirates floating in the water, K goes to investigate. Before K gets a good look at the pirates floating in the water, one grabs hold of his ankle. The rest become animated and a battle begins. The group questions their ability - 'the zombies in the tunnels almost killed us.' The group needs not doubt their ability, they make short work of the cadaver men.

We return to the den to rest. A few hours later, Ulka checks to make sure it is safe. She notices tracks around the den and hears voices. 'They are close', she says. Everyone can sense the mayor - 'he is close.' The group retreats back into the den and hides. Worms and magnets begin to surface from the ground. We become still with fear. We wait, and wait, and wait, til the bugs disappear. Hours later, Ulka sticks her head outside the den - 'He is powerful against us.' 'He can paralyze us with fear.' We follow the tracks to the river - 'the ship is gone.' We continue along the river patrolling.

The group closes in on a camp. 'It sounds like a civil war inside the palisade.' We stay back, watching the fight. The battle ends, some falling and others lead away in chains. We notice the mayor retreat and disappear into a doorway.

'This is our chance!', says Josephine.

Ulka, K, and Josephine move towards the doorway. Josephine enchants K's spear with fire before he charges in. Josephine shoots Earth Darts, hitting the mayor. The mayor comes after Josephine, burning her. K fights back, knocking the mayor to the ground. Ulka leaps in, ripping at him with her claw. For a final blow, K penetrates the mayors head with his spear, only to have small creature leap from the mayor's head onto K's. The creature begins to burrow itself into K's head. Josephine tries to help, by hitting the small creature, but hurts K instead. It continues to burrow deeper and deeper into K's head. Ulka grabs hold of it, and so does K. K is finally able to get it off. He throws it into the air, sending his spear right through it.

After the death of the Horror, the appearance of the pirates begins to change. They have aged - dramatically. The slaves begin to regain control of their thoughts and actions, and realize they can fight back. They notice us and begin to call for help. They have been released from their hold. The are now free.

Ulka, Josephine and K return to the Kaer to claim victory in defeating the mayor.

I have often wondered if others are irritated by the fact that I don't keep 'My Favorite Links' and 'Good Reads' in alphabetical order.

I often think of changing it, but that would mean I was like everyone else, and I don't want to be just like everyone else.

Just a random thought.
I am Plague. Got Me?
Which Horrible Affliction are you?

I feel just a little worse off than her.

"O Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?"

Jeff & I went to Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan for the first time tonight. The Medieval Feast entertained us with food, fencing, dancing, and a wonderful rendition of Romeo & Juliet. The fencing and dancing was put on by the Society for Creative Anachronism. Good entertainment. You know, I never thought that I would be able to say "I saw Rob Simpson bounce around with a rapier and poofy pants."

As for the play - absolutely wonderful! For starters, this is my favourite play so I am a little biased. From what I can remember from Grade 9 English, it was bang on! The acting was very well done, especially the role of the nurse. She was very comedic, and added a lot of spice to the show. Three of the actors that were in the play were also in another play that I saw recently, so it was interesting to compare the different roles they played.

For anyone who has never gone to S on the S, I highly recommend it. It gets an A+ from me.

more technology

We bought ourselves our first digital camera in preparation for our much anticipated trip to visit Amy & Randy. You see, I have a really crappy 35mm camera (well it wasn't always crappy, just lately), and I figured it was about time to go more digital with our photography. Since acquiring my lappy, as well as enjoying posting photos to my blog, it seems like a nice addition.

Check out some of the photos I have been recently taking:

my fingers are crossed

I just had my MBA interview and I think that it went well. At least I hope it went well.

There were 2 people that interviewed me, the associate dean, and the International Business Management Specialization Chair. They both were friendly, and very informative. It seemed to me that everyone was enjoying themselves. They were smiling, nodding, and laughing, and I (as usual) was talking lots. Ohhhh I hope that I didn't talk too much. I even mentioned in the interview that I was talking a lot. Oh well, I guess that shows that I am friendly, outgoing, and comfortable talking in front of strangers. I hope that bodes well for me.

Each student in the MBA program has to take MBA 992 - Project in Business Research Methodology.
This course provides students with an opportunity to develop research skills through completion of a major applied research project. The project is done in partnership with industry. The topic must be empirical in nature, and can be an area of interest to the individual student within the context of their specialization.
For the International Business Studies specialization program this coincides with the internship. The internship is anywhere from 4-6 weeks in length, and usually occurs in the months of June and July. The student focuses on an area that interests the Canadian and International partners involved in the internship and draws upon the field research carried out during the internship.

The program looks like a lot of work, but also looks like a lot of fun. I know that I can learn and experience so much from this program, I hope I am successful.

Are Canadians fat?

It would seem that, as a nation, we are getting larger and larger as the years go by.
"One in four Canadian adults is considered obese, a dramatic increase over the past 25 years, Statistics Canada reports."

What is happening? Are we eating more? Exercising less? Has our society become so 'convenience' oriented that we simply don't move around as much as we did 25 years ago?

The Body Mass Index seems to be the most common method to use in figuring out whether or not one is 'overweight' or 'obese'. And I use these words carefully; what is considered overweight, what is considered obese?
"A normal BMI rate is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range while someone who records a BMI over 30 is considered obese."

However, the only thing that the BMI takes into consideration is your height and weight. Granted these are 2 very important factors, but what about muscle mass? What about your level of activity? What about your heart? How do you feel after walking up some stairs? Going for a walk? Don't forget, some people are just naturally larger or smaller than others.

So they have determined the 'normal range' for the 'average person'. So, if your BMI is 25-30 you are considered to be overweight - well folks I guess I am overweight today. Tomorrow might be a different story. I did the calculation and I was right on the starting edge of overweight. However, when I adjusted my weight 5 lbs I was miracously a 'healthy weight'. Wow!! I can go from overweight to healthy weight in a day. I say a day cuz often my weight does flucuate around 5lbs depending on the day, what I have eaten, when I decide to weigh myself, or a number of other factors.

I consider myself to be a fairly healthy person. I try to eat a well balanced diet, and I exercise regularily. I generally feel good, sleep well, and am happy when my clothes are a little looser.

Based off my own assessment of the BMI I am not convinced of its accuracy. I feel you need to use a variety of methods to determine what weight is right for you. However, I agree with the statistics:
"Among adults, those aged 25 to 34 and 75 or older recorded the biggest increase, nearly doubling their obesity rates to 21 per cent and 24 per cent respectively.

Three per cent of children aged two to 17 were obese 25 years ago. That rate shot up to eight per cent in 2004.

The biggest increases in obesity rates in young people occurred among those aged 12 to 17, where the rate tripled from three per cent to nine percent."

We need to start taking better care of ourselves. Eating a well balanced diet full of fruits, veggies and grains is a good start, as well as some exercise. Granted I am no health nut/exercise freak, but I try and it has been working.

Wouldn't you be crazier?

Jeff & I watched The Machinist last night. Christian Bale plays a machinist who hasn't slept in 1 year.

I am not sure how to describe how I felt about the movie. To watch ones mind turn and twist reality can be a fascinating thing(in a movie of course), yet scary to actually experience.

I think the creepiest part of the movie was how skinny the main character was. I find it amazing what actors will do for a role. It was on the edge of deathly.

An interesting watch I must say. Slower moving then most other movies, however an intriguing psychological thriller.

what have I gotten myself into

So, it looks like I am gonna have to dedicate at least 2 hours a night if not more to studying for my GMAT. I realize that it is basic math, algebra and some geometry but geeezzzz it has been 10+ years. Plus re-teaching myself probably a years worth of material in four weeks is gonna take some dedication. I was fairly good at math in high school (high 80's), so I am trying to keep my confidence up - telling myself 'you can do it, you just need to study your ass off.'

Plus, that doesn't even count the other two sections of the test, the verbal and writing part. Those are my weak areas. I am horrible at gammer. :)

Ah well, if I am gonna do it, I am gonna go hard! So there will be much studying over the next month and less of CoH. boo hoo!

I should stay out of video stores

So I headed to the mall intending to purchase a yoga video, and of course got more.

My first stop was cdplus where I spied a '2 for $16' rack - of course I had to check it out. I do love movies. Trading Places caught my eye first and it wasn't long before it was in my hand. Since the deal was '2 for $16' I had to find another. I initally saw Clue, which I love but don't own on DVD, but I thought 'I need to look on the other side of the rack, there may be something better', so I did. I picked up What Dreams May Come, a movie I have thoroughly enjoyed a number of times. I am a big fan of Robin Williams, and this is unlike his usual movies. This movie was actually mentioned at one of our book club discussions and it was interesting to hear that other people had heard about it and liked it just as much as me. So if anyone is up for watching it, let me know and we can have a movie night.

I did manage to get what I had intented to go to the mall for - a yoga tape. I headed up to Music World and found what I was looking for. I got myself pilatesforlife, 20 minute ab+waist - that should do the trick, I hope and Stress Relief Yoga. I guess I have a lot of work in store for me. It will be good for me.

missing yoga

Today is the first Monday in six weeks that I won't be going to my drama class, and therefore missing out on yoga. Our drama professor was very much into yoga, and we usually spent 30-45 minutes at the beginning of each class doing yoga.

I definitely noticed a difference in my flexibility and relaxation. I quite enjoyed the yoga part of the class and am really gonna miss it. So I guess that means I have 2 options:

1. Join a class
2. Buy a tape

I am liking the second choice, mostly because it costs less. But the convenience of being able to do it whenever I want at home is also a motivator to pick number 2. I guess I just have to decide what tape to buy. Considering I know nothing about yoga and which tapes/instructors out there are better than others, it will likely be a 'pick at random' choice. I already have a yoga belt, however I may need to invest in some other props, as I really enjoyed the exercises we did with the blocks.

I think I will head to the mall and lunch time and check it out. Lets hope I am successful.

lazy, lazy long weekend

We ended up leaving Friday morning. Tyler & Brennan picked me up around 10:30, and after a stop at Tim Horton's we were on our way.

We arrived at Tomas' place around 1:30 and found Tomas to still be asleep. He was partying pretty late, I mean early (he got home at 9:30 am). It was nice of him to rise once we got there. It didn't take us long to get settled and we were changed and into the boat. We met some of Tomas' friends on the lake for socializing and beers. I got to witness the infamous 'diaper beers', but alas did not part take. Later we ended up dropping T-ass's boat off at the dock, jumped in Matt's boat to go further out into the lake. T-ass's 5hp motor just would't cut it I think. We got about a 1/4 of the way to our destination and Matt's engine seized up. I guess there is a few good things about cell phones, and it isn't just about winter highway driving. With a storm coming and us stuck in the middle of the lake, Matt's cellphone came in real handy. T-ass called up his friends and they were on there way. For the next 30 hour we relaxed, drank beer, enjoyed Pavo's (T-ass friend) guitar playing, and T-ass singing while receiving a tow back to the dock. An eventful afternoon.

Friday evening ended with a barbeque at T-ass's, and and fire over at Jordan's sisters cabin. Brennan & I headed back to the cabin around midnight, and stayed up chatting. One piece of advice - you must be forceful and loud when Tyson is drunk and snoring. There is no asking him nicely to 'shut the hell up', 'quit snoring', and 'turn over, dammit.'

Saturday was even lazier. With the guys getting back around 3:30am the night before and most of us waking up around 10:30, there wasn't a lot of sleep that was had - by me anyways. I lazed around eating breakfast, studying for my GMAT, dozing, watching Simpsons, dozing, reading, boating - though it wasn't long because of the rain, walking, and more dozing. The most activity I had yesterday was getting out on the lake with everyone to watch the fireworks - they were very impressive. We then headed over to the bar, and once again Brennan & I chatted it up on the beach while everyone else got drunk and loud in the bar. Brennan & I headed back around 2am, and the rest trickled in around 4am.

It was an early morning - 9:30, and we were ready to leave. We stop for breakfast/lunch at Humpty's in P.A, drove through a pretty nasty rain storm around Rosthern and were home by 1pm. All in all, a good relaxing weekend.

Today, I continued my laziness with CoH all afternoon and just finished watching Hitch with Jeff.

Emma Lake

Tomas and John are already up at Emma lake, and have been there for over a week now. I am headed out this morning with Brennan and Tyson to join them for the long weekend.

Looking forward to have a relaxing, fun weekend. Hopefully I will get some power reading done on the book club book.

Jeff has to stick around home this weekend. His gramma is moving from Regina to Saskatoon and he has gotta help the family get all her stuff in her new apartment.

Yeah for long weekends!!!
