Why does it always have to be about the way we look?

Over the course of the last month I have visit the PAC Centre on a number of occasions, and I am quite disturbed at the number of girls who feel the need to check themselves out and fix their hair in the mirror before going to work out.

What's up with that? When did the gym become a place where you had to be concerned about how you look? Aren't you just going to get all sweaty?

Has it always been this way? I guess if it has I have just never noticed, or paid any attention. However, at the university it is all around me. Everywhere I turn in the change room there is someone fixing their hair, or making sure they look 'just right' in whatever workout clothes they are wearing.

That is just sad. I am glad I don't feel (and never have for that matter) the need to look my best or impress others when I go to work out. I am there to be heathly and feel good about myself, not make sure I look good enough so that others will stare at me. If people don't like how I look at the gym that is there problem, not mine. Geez...

I realize that women (and men) want to look good in order to attract the opposite sex, but come on, keep it outta the gym. Because you know what, I am not going to look good, I am going to look red, sweaty, and gross.

Yeah. It happens, to a lesser extent, I think, in the men's change as well.

I don't think it's really a matter of people trying to impress others... I think it has more to do with the fact that a lot of people are VERY self conscious and don't feel comfortable being at the gym in the first place. Even I can't help myself from checking for SWASS in the mirror after a good hard run!!! It's fantastic that you're confident enough not to care.... but some of us can't help it.

Actually, at one gym I went to 90% of the women were those type of girls. They wore the trendy outfits and jewlery, had their hair nearly perfectly coiffed, and a wore bit of makeup too. Some may have come from work, but more than a few were primping at least a bit before leaving the changeroom. And this wasn't even a gym with a large male population like the PAC is.

I have heard stories at the PAC where the staff had to ask women to put on clothes that would cover more because a bum cheek would sneak out of their shorts. I find that one mind boggling.

Are we ever going to figure out that whole lunch thing? I would like to get a chance to hang out with you sometime, though I know both of our schedules are nuts right now.
